    From February 13 to 15, join fellow farmers, homesteaders, activists, consumers and even kids at next week’s Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont’s 28th Annual Winter Conference. With the theme “Celebrating the Heart of the nofaOrganic,” the event will be held in a newly expanded conference site at the University of Vermont in Burlington. Keynote speakers include LaDonna Redmond, founder of the Institute for Community Resource Development, and organic farmer Jack Lazor of Vermont’s Butterworks Farm, with a special appearance by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. Check out the 70+ workshops, special children’s conference, farmers’ market, ice cream social, Young Farmer Mixer and much more.

    Champlain Island Winter Farmers’ Market
    South Hero Congregational Church, 10 am to 2 pm

    Rutland Winter Farmers’ Market
    The Old Strand Theater behind the Rutland Natural Food Market, 10 am to 2 pm

    Montpelier Winter Farmers’ Market
    VT College of Fine Arts Gym, corner of E. State Street and College Street, 10 am to 2 pm

    Classes
    Seed Starting 101
    David Boucher will teach novice and experienced gardeners the fundamentals of seed starting for flowers and vegetable plants. Call 802.660.3505 to reserve. $10 due at time of registration. 9 to 11 am.

    Beehive Building
    Make your own Langstroth beehive from 1’x8’ lumber. Participants need basic woodworking with power tools skills. 10 am – 4 pm. Contact carolstenvt@yahoo.com to register.

    Tropical Fair Trade Day Celebration
    Fair Trade extends far beyond coffee and chocolate. Stop by City Market between 11 am and 3 pm for a taste of Fair Trade mangos, bananas, avocados, pineapples and citrus!

    Vermont Butter & Cheese Benefit for VT Campaign to End Childhood Hunger
    Book signing and cheese tasting with the founders of Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery at Mirabelles in downtown Burlington. Allison Hooper and Bob Reese will share stories from their new book In a Cheesemaker’s Kitchen, and Mirabelles will provide featured recipes. All book sales will benefit the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger. 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
